When people first see our queen Blue in person, they stop. There is something almost otherworldly about her — a cool, slate-toned coat that shifts in the light, vivid green eyes, and a presence that is unmistakably Bengal but unlike any Bengal most people have ever encountered. That is the Blue Bengal effect.
At Empress Bengal Cattery, we breed Blue Bengals because we believe they represent something genuinely rare in the cat world — not a manufactured novelty, but a naturally occurring genetic expression that has existed quietly in the Bengal gene pool for decades, waiting to be recognized for what it is.
What Is a Blue Bengal?
The Blue Bengal is a dilute expression of the standard Brown Bengal. The dilute gene (d) lightens the eumelanin pigment in the coat, shifting the rich golden-brown ground color to a soft, cool-toned grey-blue and turning the dark brown markings to a deeper blue-grey or slate. The result is a cat with a uniquely muted, almost smoky elegance — still wild-looking, still athletic, still unmistakably Bengal, but rendered in an entirely different palette.
Think of it as the difference between a painting in warm oils and the same painting in cool watercolor. The structure is identical. The impression is completely different.
"The Blue Bengal carries all the fire of the Bengal breed — the athleticism, the intelligence, the wild presence — wrapped in a coat that looks like moonlight on water."
Registry Recognition: What You Need to Know
This is the part that confuses most buyers, so let's be direct about it. Blue Bengals are currently recognized by the CFA (Cat Fanciers' Association) but are not recognized as a Championship color by TICA (The International Cat Association), which is the primary registry for Bengal cats.
The official 2024 TICA Bengal Breed Standard lists only the following colors as accepted for Championship competition:
What does that mean practically? A Blue Bengal can be fully TICA-registered and even exhibited at TICA shows — but they cannot earn Championship titles or compete in Championship rings. They are shown in a separate non-standard category and cannot be titled regardless of their quality or conformation.
This is an important distinction. Your Blue Bengal kitten is not disqualified from TICA — they simply exist outside the current Championship color framework. As the breed standard evolves and breeders continue to produce and document high-quality Blue Bengals, recognition is a conversation that continues within the Bengal community.
At Empress, our Blue Bengals come from TICA-registered parents with documented pedigrees. We are fully transparent about their registry status with every buyer. The absence of TICA Championship recognition reflects where the standard is today — not the quality, legitimacy, or beauty of these extraordinary cats.
Blue in Our Breeding Program
Our queen Blue is a Charcoal Blue Spotted Tabby — and she is, without question, one of the most visually striking cats we have ever produced. Her cool slate coat, vivid green eyes, and bold spotting make her a genuinely rare specimen. She has passed her exceptional color genetics to her offspring consistently, including our young male Cobalt — a true Blue Bengal — and Jules, a Blue Charcoal Spotted Tabby female from her litter with our sire Maximilian.
Breeding for blue requires understanding dilute genetics and pairing deliberately. You cannot simply breed two random Bengals and expect blue kittens. Both parents must carry at least one copy of the dilute gene, and the expression varies across litters. This is part of what makes blue kittens genuinely rare — even in catteries that actively breed for the color, they do not appear in every litter.
Temperament and Care
Blue Bengals are Bengals first and blue second. Their temperament, care requirements, and personality traits are identical to any other Bengal. They are highly intelligent, deeply curious, energetic, and form strong bonds with their families. They are not a lap cat by nature — they are an explorer, an observer, a participant in everything happening in your home.
If you are considering a Blue Bengal, the same preparation applies as for any Bengal: enrichment, vertical space, interactive play, and ideally a companion to keep pace with them. They thrive in active homes that understand and embrace the Bengal personality.
What Does a Blue Bengal Cost?
Because of their rarity, Blue Bengals are priced above standard brown Bengals. At Empress Bengal Cattery, our pricing reflects the quality of our breeding program, the health testing of our parents, and the rarity of the color itself.
Market pricing for Blue Bengals from reputable breeders typically ranges from $2,200 to $4,500 for pet quality, with breeder quality cats commanding significantly more. As awareness of the color grows and demand increases, prices are trending upward — making now an excellent time to add a Blue Bengal to your family.
Are Blue Bengals Right for You?
If you are drawn to the Blue Bengal, you are likely someone who appreciates the rare, the considered, and the genuinely distinctive. Blue Bengal owners often tell us that their cats attract attention wherever they go — from guests who have never seen a cat quite like this, to fellow Bengal enthusiasts who recognize immediately what they are looking at.
They are not for everyone. No Bengal is. But for the right home — active, engaged, ready for a cat that will be a genuine presence in their life — a Blue Bengal from a quality breeding program is one of the most extraordinary companion animals the cat world has to offer.
At Empress Bengal Cattery, we are proud to be among the breeders actively working to produce and place these remarkable cats. Our queen Blue started this journey for us, and her legacy continues in every slate-toned kitten that carries her color forward.
